The main difference is how heat is delivered. A conventional sauna heats the surrounding air to temperatures typically between 80°C and 100°C. An infrared sauna, by contrast, uses radiant heat panels to warm your body directly, usually operating in the 45°C to 60°C range.
For many users, especially those who find very high temperatures uncomfortable or who are newer to sauna bathing, the lower ambient heat feels more accessible. This gentler warmth still penetrates meaningfully into muscles and tissues. The lower operating temperature also means the cabin reaches a usable heat faster after switching on, which matters when you want a session before or after training rather than a prolonged warm-up wait.
Not all infrared saunas are built the same. Standard infrared cabins typically emit far infrared wavelengths, which penetrate several centimetres beneath the skin’s surface and are widely associated with relaxation and post-exercise recovery.
Full spectrum infrared saunas go further by emitting near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths simultaneously, each targeting slightly different tissue depths. Near infrared is absorbed closer to the skin surface, mid infrared reaches into soft tissue, and far infrared penetrates deeper into muscle and joint areas.
If you want flexibility across session types, consider a full-spectrum cabin. You can go for a standard far infrared model if your primary goal is relaxation and recovery after training.
Infrared saunas come in a range of sizes, from compact one-person cabins suited to a spare room or garage to multi-person units designed for larger households or light commercial use.
When choosing a size, consider how many people will realistically use the sauna at once, the available floor space, and whether the unit needs to be assembled in place or manoeuvred through narrow doorways. Most home infrared saunas run from a standard mains supply and do not require the dedicated electrical circuit that a high-output traditional sauna heater typically demands.
